The Rise of Declutter Industry in Nigeria
Firstly, what does the word “Declutter” mean in Nigerian context? Decluttering can be referred to as the practice of selling, reselling, or connecting buyers and sellers to either second-hand or underutilized household items. It could be anything like furniture, appliances, electronics and decor. Sellers often approach individuals with items they want to get rid of (“declutter”) and offer to help sell them for a fee or buy the items outright. Meanwhile, the buyers benefit from lower-cost goods compared to brand new retail prices.
Decluttering has grown rapidly in Nigeria, which is now reflecting a broader global trend towards intentional living. There are so many factors that has fueled the rise of decluttering in Nigeria.
The influence of social media and online platforms is one of the factors that has led to the rapid growth of decluttering in Nigeria. Platforms like Instagram and YouTube have introduced Nigerians to the concept of decluttering, by showcasing the transformative effects of organized spaces. Most declutter businesses operate primarily on Instagram, WhatsApp, TikTok, Facebook and other social platforms, through the use of photos, reels, and direct messaging just to market products and transact.
Another factor that has led to the rise of decluttering in Nigeria is the Economic pressure and demand for affordable goods. High costs for brand new items due to inflation and currency exchange pressures has made pre-owned good the best option for many households. The rise in dollar rate has led to the increase of import-dependent goods which has further pushed buyers towards decluttered items.
The way Nigerians are also relocating abroad (mostly termed “japa”) is making many people sell their possessions quickly before leaving the country, and this is steady demanding for declutter services.
Also, many youths in the country, including unemployed graduates have turned declutter business into a formal or informal employment opportunity.
However, while this industry has created jobs and opportunities for people and has also made buying and selling very easy for people, it has been plagued by fraud and scam operators. There are some Instagram pages which act like declutter agents, they promise sales of household items but take payments and disappear. Now people are aware of this fraudulent method, so buyers now ask to meet the sellers in person and in an open space in order to pay for whatever they are purchasing then also pick up the item easily after making payment.
In summary, decluttering has helped so many people and reduced the headache/stress of thinking of where to sell or buy their household items. Also, as a buyer, in order to avoid being scammed, it is best advisable to ensure you have a direct contact with the seller before paying for any item/appliances you wish to purchase.
