The Influence of Social Media to Modern Relationships.
Majority of us know that social media has contributed to the growth and downfall to so many relationships across the globe. Social media has changed how relationships begin, grow and end. While social media helps people connect easily, it also introduces new challenges.
We have had so many people give testimonies on how they met their partner, some say through Facebook, while some say it was through Instagram or LinkedIn, yes LinkedIn! LinkedIn is a workspace site, but we’ve had people tell stories on how they met their husband/wife on LinkedIn. People also meet their partner on dating sites such as Tinder, Bumble, Bumpy etc. However, while social media has helped people connect easily and made them legal couples, social media has also impacted some relationships negatively.
One major impact of social media on modern relationships is the constant comparison. There are couples who often compare their relationships to what they see online, luxury dates, surprise gifts, or the “perfect” partner, forgetting that there is no such thing as “a perfect relationship”. Relationships are filled with ups and downs; every relationship cannot be all rosy. Comparison in relationships create unrealistic expectations, couples who tend to compare mostly forget that social media mostly shows highlights and not the real struggles.
Another major problem is that some couples in modern relationships do not believe in what they call “privacy”. Some partners believe that love should be displayed online. Meanwhile, we have couples who also value privacy. This difference can cause conflicts especially when one partner feels unloved because they are not being posted online or acknowledged publicly.
However, social media also has some positive impacts to modern relationships. Social media allows long-distance relationships to work and survive through constant communication and video calls. It also helps people meet partners they might never have encountered offline.
In summary, social media itself is not really the problem, but how people use it could be a problem. How social media is used determines whether it strengthens or damages modern relationships. So, it is advisable to not always believe everything you see posted on social media.
