How low are you willing to go?
Going on social media these days is like opening a surprise gift you don’t know what you will find. You can be scrolling through TikTok one minute you are watching the lifestyle of a rich, pretty girl and then you scroll to the next video and you see a grown male adult whining his waist to Tyla’s Chanel song, and so I ask can dignity be maintained in the pursuit of fame and money?
This pandemic cuts across all social media platforms, now everyone wants a piece of the cake, truthfully so do I. If I can earn thousands of dollars and have hundreds of unapologetic, always defending fans, why not?
where do we draw the line? Or are we just okay with becoming architects of chaos?
Scrolling through X (formerly twitter) the banger boys and girls are the rulers of that space, some known for making false statements or misleading information just to drive up views and engagement to get the “Elon money” or the performance displayed on Instagram or the silliness of TikTok, the keypad warriors and the bullies that cut across all platforms.
The Nigerian social media space is becoming intellectually bankrupt where you have to sound or look silly to gain followers, or do something unacceptable to trend. Few days a certain person was trending for inciting Nigerians with a fake sexual assault story, yesterday destroying vehicles was the trend to gain attention, sure there are a good amount of genuine content and actual impactful content creators but still the views are nothing compared to the ones gotten from performative madness, we have created a system where lies travel faster.
I want the success, the reach, and the money, but I refuse to let my character be the sacrificial lamb.
Now I ask how do I make this social media money and keep my dignity?
