BOOKS; PERFECT MIRRORS THAT REFLECT THE SOCIETY.
“ Mirror, mirror on the wall!
Who’s the fairest of them all?”
The fairy wicked queen.
We’ve all virtually seen the Hollywood blockbuster, where a fabled wicked queen was so obsessed with beauty, grace and poise that she would do anything to be the comeliest in the kingdom and would kill for it . To reassure herself of her allure, she always asked her magic mirror the above quoted question.
why?
A mirror acutely, flawlessly unapologetically and with precise exactitude reflects anything and anyone before it .
This is what books do for the society, written words that stoke our conscience, enlighten our hearts and discipline us where necessary . One could even say that books are the silent teachers. A writer would on the basis of literary license , say something explosive about an arbitrary and authoritarian government without repercussions , a feat the average soldier daren’t. Hence, we say the role of the writer is to serve as a credible voice for the masses, an unbiased umpire who checks the entirety of the society with written words.
The sages were right;
“The pen is mightier
than the sword”
So i guess the guess the question is, have you read a good book today? Be honest, when last did you feed your mind? Especially in these troubled times, everyone has an opinion , ranging from politics , to relationships, war ( Russia and Ukraine, Israel and Gaza etc) marriage…
Controversial topics like rape, divorce , feminism gain the most public traction but how many persons are speaking from a place of wisdom and insight. What we feed our minds is directly proportional to what we say and how we act. The role of the writer is to intelligently articulate all these so as to teach and correct us. Hence, most writers are predominantly inspired by the society they live in or have experienced. Books, the perfect mirror for our society.
The Nigerian government, led by president Bola Tinubu is currently in a bitter contest with the incarcerated IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu. The local and international community has a lot to say about this saga, Nigeria is divided on two teams ; Team Nigeria and team IPOB. Everyone is talking at once but how many persons truly understand what this saga is really about?
How many persons truly understand the history, causative factors and indeed the nitty-gritty of this saga ?
I’m Debby, author and writer , sharing my thoughts .
We shall talk more on books , acutely reflecting our society . It’s my privilege to suggest a good book to you today , a book that answers the big Nigerian question…
It’s titled “ A Chance To Live Again “ subtitled “ The Rebirth” by Deborah James . Available on amazon.
